India says no to BT Brinjal

New delhi: The Centre Government has put a moratorium on the commercial release of genetically modified brinjal.

Minister for Enviornment and Forests Jairam Ramesh told reporters here on Tuesday that the decision to defer the release of BT brinjal has been taken in view of the strong opposition from the scientific community, state governments and the civil society organisation.

The moratorium on the release of Bt Brinjal was imposed till a time that independent scientific studies establish satisfaction of both public and professionals, the safety of the product from the point of view of long-term impact on human health and environment, he said.

The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) had last year recommended the commercial release of BT Brinjal but it had referred the matter to the minister for a final decision.
