Justice Anand to head Mullaperiyar Panel
New Delhi: Former Supreme Court Justice AS Anand will head the empowered committee, which would look into all issues, including the safety aspects of the Mullaperiyar dam and Kerala’s demand for a new dam.
A five-judge constitution bench comprising Justices D K Jain, B Sudarshan Reddy, M K Sharma, R M Lodha and Deepak Verma has asked the Centre to constitute the panel within a month and also to bear all its expenses. The term of the panel would be six months.
The Apex court had yesterday decided to appoint a five member committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, two technical experts not connected with this dispute appointed by the Centre, and two members from each Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The decision was taken while hearing the suit filed by the Tamil Nadu government questioning a law enacted by Kerala to prevent raising water level in the Mullaperiyar dam beyond 136 ft. as against 142 ft. allowed by the Supreme Court.
While Tamil Nadu government wants the water level to be raised to 142 feet, Kerala wants to
replace the dam with a new one.
