Left to launch campaign against ASEAN treaty

The Left parties in the country will launch a campaign against India's Free Trade Agreement with ASEAN, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat has said.

Addressing a party rally at Irutty near Kannur on Wednesday, he said the Left a convention of the Left parties would be held in New Delhi on August 26 to discuss the implications of the ASEAN agreement and chart out the course of campaign.

Mr Karat said the haste with which the Centre government had signed the agreement only showed that the Manmohan Singh government was continuing with its liberal policies, which was not good for the country.

India has signed the ASEAN Free Trade agreement for duty free import and export of 4,000 products ranging from steel to apparel to sugar and tobacco over a period of eight years.
