Central team to Munnar

Palakkad: Union Minister of Forests and Environment Jairam Ramesh on Friday said an expert team would be sent to Munnar for conducting a detailed study of all issues related to this hilly tract.

The team would b led by Additional Director General of Forest P B Gangopadhya. The team had been asked to visit Munnar at the earliest and to submit a report within three weeks, he told reporters here after declaring the Parambikulam Wild Life sanctuary as a Tiger reserve.

The Central team would examine whether anybody has encroached forest land among other issues.

On Athirapally Hydro electric project, he reiterated that Centre could not give clearance to the project. ``The clearance was denied on the basis of reports of the forest and bio-diversity departments,`` he said.
