Parambikulam declared Tiger reserve

    Palakkad: The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary was on Friday declared a tiger reserve, which is the second in the state after the Periyar Tiger reserve.

    Union Minister of Forests and Environment Jairam Ramesh declared the Wildlife sanctuary a Tiger reserve at a function held at Aanapadi.

    The Parambikulam Reserve is the 38th Tiger reserve in the country. The sanctuary will have a core area of 398.88 sq km and a buffer area of 252.77 sq km,that includes Chalakudy, Nermara and Vazhachal Forest Divisions.

    The sanctuary is home to about 1,500 species of plants, 39 mammals, 260 species of birds and 49 species of fish.
