Chandy denies allegation against Thankachan

Kozhikode: Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy on Saturday denied allegations of the CPI (M) that United Democratic Front convener P P Thankachan had encroached land in Munnar.

Stating that the Communist led agitations in Wynad was illegal, he told reporters here that the UDF was not against legitimately evicting the encroachers.

He also said that it was the government's responsibility to provide land for the landless tribals.

On the hike of petroleum products, he said the state government would be able to ward off the adverse impact of fuel price hike by exempting state surcharge on it.

Though the government would get additional revenue of Rs 150 crore through surcharge, the government should exempt it to help the public, he said and added that the previous UDF government had set a precedent by taking a similar action losing Rs 120 crore.
