Pongala hearths lighted
Thiruvananathapuram: Hundreds of Lakhs of women today began offering Pongala at the famous Attukal Devi temple, known as the ``Women`s Sabarimala``.
The ritual began at 1013 Hrs when the chief priest lighted the ‘holy hearth’ near the temple. Within seconds, the flame was exchanged and lakhs of hearths were lit, marking the beginning of Pongala.
Even hours before the start of Pongala, the roads, footpaths and bylanes in a radius of several kilometres around the temple were thronged by women devotees.
According to temple officials, all arrangements are in place for the festival and they hoped that the crowd would be bigger than last year.
Pongala is the rice offering to Attukal Amma.
According to legend, Kannaki destroyed Madurai in Tamil Nadu after the king of Madurai wrongfully imposed the death penalty on her husband. After that, Kannaki travelled to Kerala, where she rested for a while at Attukal and women are said to have cooked pongala to appease her.
