Economist K N Raj dead

    Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran economist K N Raj died on Wednesday at a private hospital here.

    He was 86.

    Founder of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Kakkadan Nandanath Raj played an important role in India's planned development. He is credited with drafting sections of India's first Five Year Plan, especifically the introductory chapter.

    Raj was also vice-chancellor of Delhi University and a member of the prime minister`s economic advisory council for many years.

    In 1971, Raj founded the CDS, which had now become an institute of international repute, after an invitation from the then Kerala Chief Minister C Achutha Menon to set up an academic research institute in the state.

    He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2000.
