Cabinet committee to look into Munnar encroachment

Thiruvananthapuram: With the encroachment issue in Munnar again coming to the forefront, the Kerala government has entrusted a cabinet sub-committee to take appropriate decision on initiating steps to evict encroachers from this hilly town.

Talking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said Wednesday the LDF government would take stern action against encroachers and also against the officials who clandestinely supported the encroachers.

Ministers from the Home, Forest, Local Administration and Revenue Departments will constitute the sub-committee, he said.

It was last week that the Kerala High Court stressed the need for stern action against illegal construction and encroachment in Munnar while hearing a public interest litigation.

When pointed about the opposition by the local unit of the CPI(M) against the encroachers in Munnar, Achuthanandan said It was the LDF government's policy which was being implemented at Munnar and not any political party’s decision.'
