Govt for Classical status to Malayalam

    Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Culture Minister M A Baby on Wednesday said the state government was taking all steps for getting classical status to Malayalam language.

    Replying to a calling attention, he told the State Assembly the government had been pursuing the Centre for according classical status to Malayalam language.

    The International Dravidan Language Study Centre had been asked to prepare documents in this regard, he added.

    He also stated that a delegation led by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard and the PM had said that the demand would be favourably considered.

    A ''Bhasha convention'' would be held soon on the lines of the World Tamil Meet, he said.
