2016 Olympics goes to Rio de Janeiro
Copenhagen: Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics after it won the vote to host the games.
Rio de Janeiro beat off the challenges of Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago in a vote by International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegates at the IOC Session in Copenhagen.
Chicago was eliminated in the first round, and Tokyo went out in the second.
Even though President Barack Obama had flown in with support for Chicago, the Brazilian city was the favourite among the delegates at the IOC session.
While Rio Governor Sergio Cabral said it was unbelievable, overwhelming and spectacular, Brazilian football legend Pele was reduced to tears.
